Field Manual
For Fraternity Success

By John Hatfield

12 principles every fraternity man needs to thrive. The guide nobody handed you as a member — or as an officer elected to a leadership role in your fraternity.

What does it look like to use my masculine power for good — to move from boyhood to manhood?

Life will be hard, not easy, with plenty of setbacks. What are the noble elements of hardship you need to learn?

  • The principles of leadership — and why the first is learning how to lead and conquer yourself.
  • How to handle conflict like a man of character.
  • Why the people-pleaser is ineffective in leadership.
  • What a sustainable, successful chapter actually looks like.
  • How to call out courage over your anxiety and grow in masculine strength.
  • The significance of engaging juniors and seniors, giving them a platform to influence.
  • Having the stones to purge members who destroy the reputation of the chapter.
  • Understanding that everything rises, stagnates, or fails based on chapter culture.
  • What others say about you — your brand, your reputation: is it by design or default?

Our Mission

Built for the Man
in the Arena

You have just stepped out of high school into the university and joined a fraternity. The uncertainty is real — and so is the excitement. This is the next stage in the rite of passage into your masculinity.

Our masculinity involves grit through adversity, taking risks, sacrificing, calling out courage over fear, embracing responsibility, and learning to lead and conquer yourself daily — while serving others and using your masculine power for good.

When you enter the arena, you learn to call out your man-courage over your anxiety. Leadership always starts with learning to lead and conquer yourself — if you can’t lead yourself, why would anyone follow you?

More Than Anxiety — The Solution

The Warrior Spirit

A mindset and way of living characterized by courage, discipline, perseverance, purpose, and service. These are your battlefields — the same qualities of the warriors who came before you. Cultivating them is what allows a man to face hardship, uncertainty, and fear with resolve.

Core Traits of a Warrior Spirit
Courage
Act while the fear is still present.
Discipline
Do it when the motivation is gone.
Responsibility
Own the outcome, good or bad.
Resilience
Rise again after every setback.
Loyalty
Stand with your brothers.
Self-Mastery
Lead and conquer yourself first.
Service
Use your strength for others.
What It Looks Like
  • It’s an officer making the difficult decisions.
  • A brother persevering through challenges.
  • A brother standing up for what is right when it is unpopular.
  • A brother choosing character over convenience.
  • A brother saying no to himself and yes to what is needed.
  • A brother holding members accountable and responsible.
  • A brother who protects the charter of the fraternity.
  • A brother committed to not lying, stealing, or cheating — nor tolerating those who do.

The fraternity warrior spirit is the courage to lead, the discipline to grow, the strength to serve, the perseverance in trials, and the honor to stand with your brothers when they need it the most.

"It takes courage to grow from boyhood to manhood — becoming who you really are."

Masculine Power for Good

The Ultimate Purpose of Your
Masculine Power Is to Use It for Good

We provide what is needed. We protect what is unprotected. We solve problems. We proclaim what is right. And we perform acts of service — setting the masculine example for all to see, and for boys to follow.

We provide what is needed — stepping up with strength, presence, and resources for those who depend on us.
P

We protect what is unprotected — guarding our brothers, our values, and those who cannot defend themselves.
P
Problem-Solve
We solve problems — facing what is broken head-on instead of waiting for someone else to fix it.
P
Proclaim
We proclaim what is right — speaking truth with conviction, even when it is unpopular.
P
Perform
We perform acts of service — setting the masculine example for all to see, and for boys to follow.

"You can’t become what you can’t define — whether it’s your masculinity, your heroism, or the ideal fraternity man."

"Show me the man you honor, and I will know what kind of man you are — for it shows your ideal of manhood, and the kind of man you long to be."

The Man Behind
the Warrior

John Hatfield is a podcast host, speaker, and men’s advocate on a mission to change the conversation around male anxiety — and to help men discover and use their masculine power for the good of others. He built the Anxious Warrior Podcast after living through the exact experiences his audience faces: the anxiety of being the leader, the recruitment chair, the new member educator, the athletic chair, IFC, risk, and president — all while trying to become the man he was designed and chosen to be.

What John discovered — and now teaches — is that the anxiety isn’t the enemy. It’s the signal. The men who learn to bring courage, grit, commitment, and determination to their fear are the ones identified as courageous warriors. John focuses on what it means to be male and to lead from that foundational strength.

Fraternity Leadership & Formation

John focuses on male anxiety and what it means to lead with masculine power, value honesty and integrity, do what is right in your decisions, and make lifetime brothers who sharpen each other to become the best version of themselves.

John has a graduate degree with an emphasis in leadership and sports psychotherapy, and has also served as a wrestling and swim coach. For 30 years, he has worked with fraternity men, impacting chapter culture, assisting exec and officers as they lead and influence, and revamping recruitment as one of the most important distinctions for a chapter.

He is published in numerous articles concerning fraternity life and is the author of Forged in Bravery: A Man’s Guide to Living Authentically, Overcoming Adversity, and Reclaiming Masculinity.

John was on FSL staff at Kansas State University, working with fraternities that were struggling and later serving as Interim Director. He served on staff with Sigma Alpha Epsilon on the Chapter Expansion team as well as the Risk Management team, and now serves as a consultant. He is also on staff as the leadership consultant for Beta Sigma Psi.

John has spoken at AFVL many times and for a variety of fraternities, including FIJI, Kappa Sigma, Delta Sigma Psi, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Gamma Rho, FarmHouse, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Beta Theta Pi, to name a few. John has a BS degree from Kansas State University and an MS degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

What John Believes
  • Anxiety is not a weakness — it’s a signal that you care enough to fight.
  • Every man has a warrior inside him. Most just haven’t been shown how to find him.
  • Real strength is built through honesty, discipline, and brotherhood — not performance.
  • The ultimate purpose of masculine power is to use it for the good of others.

What We Stand For

The Code of the
Anxious Warrior

Five principles every fraternity warrior lives by — starting with the first: every man must learn to lead and conquer himself daily.

01
Self-Mastery
Leadership starts here. Every man must learn to lead and conquer himself daily before he can lead anyone else.
02
Authenticity
Own your reality. It starts with self-awareness — no performance, no pretending. The warrior begins with the truth of where he actually is.
03
Courage
Courage is not the absence of fear — it's taking the next step while fear is present. That's the warrior's move.
04
Discipline
Motivation fades. Discipline is the system that keeps you moving when the feeling is gone. Build the habit, become the man.
05
Brotherhood
No man wins alone. The warrior builds a tribe of men who sharpen each other, hold each other accountable, and refuse to let each other quit.
